By now most of us have heard of Facebook’s custom audience targeting. Today I’m going to talk about something quite similar that hasn’t gotten as much publicity as the email/phone number list targeting feature many Facebook advertisers have been praising.
How often do you find yourself targeting a similar user base time and time again, wishing there was a quicker way to create new ads – or save a set of preset targeting options for later? If you’re anything like me, it’s very often.
Thank you, Facebook, for introducing a new audience creation tool simply labeled as ‘targeting’ in Facebook’s Power Editor. This new feature allows advertisers to create their targeting parameters and save them later for continued use at the check of a box. After you select your targeting options for this audience, replicating your targeting is incredibly simple.
(An aside: Facebook has a convenient ‘create similar ad’ feature that you can use to pull a preconceived set of targeting criteria – but creating ads this way can become incredibly inconvenient if you are attempting to change the ad type or make a brand new campaign.)
Here is your step-by-step guide on creating your first ‘Targeting Audience’:
Step One: Open Power Editor
This is an incredible tool that all Facebook advertisers should have in their arsenals. It is where Facebook releases all of their new ad features first, and it really allows you to make a multitude of edits very efficiently. If you haven’t installed the Power Editor extension in Chrome yet, you can do so here.
Step Two: Navigate to Targeting
There are plenty of fun things to play with in Power Editor, so to help keep you on track, I will show you how to find the ‘Targeting’ option.
Along the row of options on the top of Power Editor’s menu bar, you will see a heading labeled ‘Audiences’ – select this.
After you’ve selected this heading, you will see a drop-down menu labeled ‘Create Audience.’ After you’ve clicked this menu, select the ‘Targeting’ option.
Step Three: Select Your Targeting
Finally, you can create your audience the same way you would for any new Facebook ad. After you’ve enabled all of your targeting parameters, make sure you give your target a descriptive name so you can easily decipher what user base you will be targeting when you couple your ad creative with this Targeting Audience.
Bonus: Create Audience Using Ad
Another way to make a new Targeting Audience is by pulling the targeting you have designated to another ad in your account.
If you are on the ‘Ads’ tab in your account, select the ad that contains the targeting you wish to save. At the top, you will see a button that says ‘Create Audience Using Ad’:
After you click this button, you will have the option to rename your Targeting. I highly recommend doing this if you plan on saving multiple Targeting Audiences, as this will help you determine which is which.
There you have it, I hope you’ve found this guide useful. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!
