If you believe Google Trends, we’ll see that by November 2016 the demand and search of infographics will increase by 5%. If you market content and you still haven’t used visual data to attract more people to your website, then you should explore certain infographic design tools that’ll make your work easier and cheaper.
Didn’t major in design? Don’t have the budget for a designer? You don’t need to worry as long as you take into account the following 5 tips:
- Use Contrasting Colors: The main goal of infographics is to make information simple to digest. It is an unspoken rule that your infographic should use contrasting colors, otherwise it would be difficult to perceive the written words. A medium shade of blue on purple doesn’t make any sense, but black on a white background makes it easier for one to read. Contrasting colors tend to be appealing and pleasing to the eyes; use colors that follow this rule, and your job is half done.
- Fonts and Text: You may get carried away and overuse fonts just as you would with colors, given the vast options available. But this would be a disaster for your infographic. Stick to 2-3 font styles and be consistent. For example, all the titles/headings should have similar fonts; this rule applies to the subheadings and the content as well.
- Use Icons: Make sure that the icons you use do not dominate the text. Your aim is to get across information, and if your icon is not relevant to the text, you’re in trouble. Look at Apple: they’ve transformed a simple Apple icon into a worldwide symbol for a cutting-edge brand, not a fruit. Make sure that you hire a good graphic designer who knows what he/she is doing and is creative enough to bring out a unique and interesting icon for your brand.
- Use negative space in your layout: You not only need a creative graphic designer; you also require a clever editor who can play with words and cut out unnecessary junk. A good infographic respects negative space: the space between objects/text that makes it easier for the reader to have a grasp over the intended message. Many newbies have a habit of ignoring the negative space and including everything from A to Z, making the infographic look cluttered and confusing and also visually unappealing. - Keep in mind the page parameters: Make sure that the final size of the infographic is attractive to the audience. You should create a fine balance between the width and length of the page. If your infographic is too narrow, the copy will look jumbled. If the page is excessively wide, then people will be forced to scroll sideways to understand it.
You need to iterate and iterate before you showcase your final product. Do not make the readers frustrated by overdoing your infographic. More often than not, a minimalistic design with the right color palette goes a long way to attract eyeballs.
