Get to know: Laura Rodnitzky, VP of People at 3Q Digital and longtime cornerstone of our Chicago office.
Who is the unsung hero of your team?
Honestly, I think everyone on the Ops side is an unsung hero of 3Q! Finance, Tech, HR, and Office Management do so much to support the rest of the company, but because they’re mostly behind the scenes, they don’t get as much recognition. 3Q has been growing very quickly, which means the number of “clients” for the Ops team has grown quickly, too. But everyone continues to be hardworking, courteous, and graceful under pressure. I’m really proud to be working with this group!
Care to share your favorite spot to work from home?
My favorite work from home spot is actually one of the neighborhood coffee shops. I can focus a lot better when my adorable (and needy) dog Kurby isn’t around.
What does 3Q’s culture mean to you?
It’s the reason I’ve been with 3Q (aka PPC Associates) for more than six years, which is about six times longer than I’d ever stayed at a previous job! It is refreshing and rewarding to work for a company that treats employees like adults and gives us the freedom to determine what schedule and environment will produce the best results for us as individuals; that has executives and managers who are willing to talk to anyone about pretty much anything; that is committed to using employee feedback to constantly evolve the way we do things across the org; and that provides a ton of opportunity for personal and professional growth. Sometimes I think people focus too much on the material perks we get (free food, happy hours, etc.) and lose sight of what’s truly special about 3Q.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to work at 3Q?
Be prepared to learn more than you ever thought possible in a short amount of time. I feel like no matter what your previous experience was and what part of the company you come into, you will be challenged with new things on a constant basis. It can be overwhelming at times, and you may feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up, but you will come out of it with great knowledge and skills that will keep you moving forward.
Which of 3Q’s core values is most important to you, and why?
Obviously I think they are all important, but I would probably say “own it” is the most important to me. I interpret it in two ways: 1) Be proactive and passionate about what you do and 2) Take ownership of your mistakes. We all make mistakes. The question is, what do we do about them, what do we learn from them, and how do we prevent them from happening again?
Which 3Q value do you most embody, and how do you embody it?
As VP of People, it’s my job to “act for the greater good”, and I am more than happy to do it! I feel very lucky to be able to dedicate time to working with individuals and groups of employees to find ways to maintain the good things about our employee experience, while also looking for ways to improve it, and to be a sounding board for their questions, suggestions, and concerns.
If you had to switch offices, which office would you pick and why?
Vermont! I like the relaxed, small-town feel of Burlington (and all the great activities in both winter and summer). They also have a very cool office and do ridiculously cool things with their LocalPerks money, like aerial yoga.
What has been your favorite perk item/activity?
The Fitbit challenge. I am incredibly competitive, so I love things like that! I’m still using my Fitbit today and have started doing daily or weekly challenges with other friends (both inside and outside 3Q) who have Fitbits. It’s a great way to stay motivated to be active.
What is on your bucket list?
Fortunately I’ve already done a lot of things on my bucket list. At this point, number one is probably to do an Ironman triathlon. I did an Olympic triathlon many years ago, and a couple of marathons two years ago, so I feel like I have it in me if I can dedicate the time to training for a year.
What’s your favorite thing on your desk?
My solar-powered dancing monkey.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
Since having my son in April, it’s been hanging out with him and watching him learn new tricks. Right now he’s babbling a ton (I’m pretty sure he’s trying to say how much he loves me) and trying to roll over. Luckily he’s a pretty relaxed kid, so I can keep up with two of my other favorite things to do – going on long walks around the city and trying new restaurants.
