Get to know: Todd Mintz, SEM Consigliere at 3Q Digital who works remotely out of Portland Oregon.

What’s the first metric you check when you start the day?

Where my coffee is.  Seriously…most of my accounts are on Marin and I’m looking at the History Tab with all the Conversion Columns visible as my sanity check.  If something looks off, I dig deeper.

What is your favorite advertising campaign?

I grew up watching the classic Lite beer from Miller commercials, and I’m not sure any current campaign has ever topped them.  They’re on message, memorable, funny, and have star power not available today.

What’s one marketing lesson you wished you had learned earlier?

It isn’t really a marketing lesson but early on in my 3Q career, I labored under the misguided notion that my normal snarky, irreverent self would not be an appropriate personality for my work environment.  How wrong I was.  It’s actually one of my biggest strengths, and now, I accentuate these traits instead of hiding them.

What one quality do you think is most important in successful digital marketers today? 

Perception…by a huge margin.  Rigorous process and discipline is great, but it only gets you to a certain point.  Acute perception is what separates the rock stars in this industry from the “very goods”.

Care to share your favorite spot to work from home?

I’m not able to work effectively away from my desk.  However, each part of my work environment has to be just perfect…including my Herman Miller Embody Chair, mechanical keyboard, Evoluent Ergonomic Mouse, wrist band, music, room temperature, room lighting, and caffeine level in my body.  People who can be productive in a coffee shop or on an airplane astound me.

Which of 3Q’s core values is most important to you, and why?

XQ: Kick ass for the client and everything else will fall into place nicely.

If you had to switch offices, which office would you pick and why?

Burlington is very cool.  Austin certainly is cool (though I’ve yet to travel there).  Raleigh is reasonably close to where my parents live.  I’ll pass on the others…

What is your motivation to come into work every day?

Every account and every client is an ongoing narrative.  Each day is a new, exciting chapter…and you can’t DVR the chapters that you miss.

What has been your favorite perk item/activity? 

I used to have a client in Nashville who wanted me to meet him in person.  I scheduled the trip so I was able to fly in early and see Norah Jones play the Ryman, which was truly amazing.

What trips have you gone on/do you plan to go on with your unlimited PTO? 

I live in Oregon and I’ve yet to see Crater Lake.  I need to change that.  The music festival Wilco puts on every couple of years would be pretty cool to attend as well.

Hot dogs or hamburgers?

Hamburger.  Rare…actually…very rare.
