Get to know Hillary Read, Director of Marketing, working out of our office in Burlington, Vermont.

What’s the first metric you check when you start the day?

Total site visits, organic traffic, leads, and referrals. The latter is useful to show when some of our content has been picked up or featured in other outlets, which is always a fun start to the day.

What’s one metric you rarely bother to check?

Bounce rate.

If you had $10M to personally invest, which marketing platform or technology would you invest in, and why?

Facebook. They’ve made a ton of smart investments that have yet to bear fruit, they’ve got super-smart people building new things every day, and they’ve shown the ability to figure things out (mobile!) in a relatively short time.

What is your favorite thing to brag about at 3Q?

The Vermont office and my teammates (Jonathan, Kristen, and Steve). And when one of our folks gets a speaking engagement, gets featured in another outlet, writes something for a big publication, etc., that makes my day. I used to brag about the blog all the time because that truly showcases some of the best parts of our company — thought leadership, contributions at all levels, culture, etc. — but that’s Jonathan’s domain now, so I let him do the bragging.

Who is the unsung hero of your team?

I mean, my team is a bunch of smart, hard-working, get-it-done people, and singling out one of them wouldn’t be fair to the others. Company-wide, I’d say Laura Rodnitzky, who has built the Chicago office and has filled in so many gaps over the years when needed — even though I don’t think she’s had formal training for any of them.

What’s the best part of your office?

The Vermont office has views of the lake, exposed brick, an awesome coffee shop downstairs, and a comfy white shag rug that my mutt has adopted for naptime.

Care to share your favorite spot to work from home?

I’ve got a little home-office nook with a skylight, but when I need a break, the view from the back deck is pretty cool.

What does 3Q’s culture mean to you?

It means that we’ve built a team of really talented, highly accountable people and developed company policies that align with our personnel. The flexibility in particular has meant the world to me — for instance, being able to move back to Vermont from San Francisco and take my job with me. I reflect at least twice a week on how lucky I am on that front.

What advice do you have for someone who wants to work at 3Q?

Prepare to learn fast and be accountable – and expect to be valued highly for it.

Which of 3Q’s core values is most important to you, and why?

Own it. A huge part of my job is asking subject experts for content, interviews, data, etc., so we can help tell the stories of what we do. If I’m not accountable, I can’t ask anyone else to deliver what I need from them. Same goes for my team: they accomplish a ton over the course of a day, and I don’t ever want them to feel like they’re waiting on me for what they need or that I’m blocking them.

If you had to switch offices, which office would you pick and why?

A San Diego winter exchange program sounds pretty good…but it’d be hard not to go back to San Francisco.

What is your motivation to come into work every day?

I believe that what we’re doing as a company is of value — not just growing our clients, but helping grow great careers. The more the Marketing team can help build 3Q’s profile, the stronger we are in hiring, in attracting clients, etc. And it’s awesome to be able to help colleagues build their personal brands.

What trips have you gone on/do you plan to go on with your unlimited PTO?

I went to visit some old friends in India in July…that was incredible.

Would you rather fight 100 duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck?

Hmm. The duck-sized horses…I’d just throw out a bunch of baby carrots to distract them. Then I’d probably snuggle them aggressively.

Hot dogs or hamburgers?

A medium-rare burger with mushrooms, swiss, and spicy mustard. And now I’m jonesing for a hamburger.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
