Humans of 3Q is back this week with Associate Director of CRO Lindsay Fowler, out of our San Diego office! Get to know Lindsay below:
Explain your role at 3Q in 3 sentences or fewer:
Research to learn about customers, hypothesize ways to improve conversion rates, and then run tests to see if our ideas work. That’s CRO in a nutshell.
What’s one marketing lesson you wished you had learned earlier?
“Done is better than perfect,” especially in CRO. You can waste so much time trying to get something perfect, when you could have already completed a project and got some great insights that you can iterate off of.
How did you get your start in CRO?
I was tricked into it! After teaching 4th grade for 5 years, I put out some feelers for something new. I saw this awesome position with a marketing company for a “Curriculum Administrator,” which was right up my educational alley. After 6 interviews, they finally told me “This isn’t actually a position that exists to fill, but we still want to hire you.” I had a few teaching offers lined up still, but chose to join the company as a CRO research analyst and try something new. The rest is history. Turns out, I really enjoy it!
When coworkers from other offices come to visit, what’s one thing they absolutely have to do in San Diego?
They have to get a California Burrito, a delicious and mythical burrito found in Southern California. It has carne asade, cheese, sour cream, and french fries!! Maybe take that burrito to La Jolla and watch some of the seals, or have a picnic in Balboa Park.
How do you spend your free time?
I’ve recently gotten back into yoga after some time off, so been spending a lot of time doing that. I also play the cello in an adult community orchestra. Of course my favorite thing to do is watch trashy TV (usually TLC or some kind of cartoon) with my husband and dog cuddled up with me. :)
Tell us about your morale associate:
1. Daffodil Fowler – my neurotic papillon.
2. Fancy Fowler – my lazy cat.
They keep me on my toes when working from home by walking all over my keyboard and barking on conference calls. I also can’t forget my goldfish, guppies, and snails (Evelyn and Angelo), who are pretty relaxing to watch when things get stressful!
What’s been the coolest thing you’ve done with your unlimited PTO?
We moved to California from Florida when I started at 3Q, so must of my unlimited PTO is used going back to see family and friends (not as cool, but so important). But we did just go on an amazing trip to Hawaii. We got to snorkel and eat some amazing food, and I even swam with sharks.
What’s your favorite TED talk?
Pretty much any TED talk by Brene Brown. She’s a research professor who studies courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy – basically human emotions! It’s always a nice reminder to see how connected we all are and why we do the things we do. Deep down, CRO is all about understanding people, so I’m always drawn to that kind of research.
