This is the subhead for the blog post
Our Humans of 3Q series continues this week with Lauren Varney, Office Manager, out of our San Diego office! Get to know Lauren below:
Explain your role at 3Q in 3 sentences or fewer:
I do my best to maintain the vibrant culture and daily atmosphere of my office by planning fun activities, surprise snacks, and friendly competitions. Keeping the office entertained, well-fed, and engaged helps break up their day.
What sets 3Q apart from other agencies in the industry?
Trust. Since I started, I’ve observed numerous ways in which the company builds trust in its employees. Working from home, unlimited paid time off, bring your dog in, work remotely – these are all opportunities for the company to show belief in its staff. Trusting everyone to get their work done allows for easier breathing and greater loyalty. 3Q knows its team members are humans, not robots, and need to be invested in, believed in, and shown that trust.
What’s something that makes your office cooler than the other 3Q offices?
Aside from the epic view straight into Petco Park downtown, and stunning sunset views of the downtown landscape from a fancy rooftop? We have one of the most cohesive squads of people around; our food obsession causes bake-offs, taste testing, and critical review sessions all for the sake of snacking – and for the crown, of course.
When coworkers from other offices come to visit, what’s one thing they absolutely have to do in your city?
Go to more than one beach! Our beaches can all be quite different and it’s well worth finding one off the beaten path. Snorkel through caves in La Jolla, get a massive burrito and watch the sunsets over a bonfire. Finally, don’t make the mistake of coming in May (grey) or June (gloom) – August/September is our best sunny/warm season.
What 3Q initiative outside of your job description are you most proud of being a part of?
The Work/Life Balance Committee. Especially in an office setting, staffers can get too used to hunkering down at their desks for too long! It’s especially important to me that I consistently incorporate the best ergonomics, stretches, exercises, and mental breaks for my office. I also remind folks to use their PTO! Your life and your work should be perfectly balanced; don’t forget to put as much effort into your life and health as you do your job!
Have you participated in 3Q 3%? If so, what’s been your favorite experience?
Of course! One of my favorite recent 3Q3% ventures was building birthday kits for less-fortunate youths. The office all spent time bagging up cake mixes, frosting, candles, decorations, and presents for local children in need. It not only was fun putting them together as a team, I’m sure it made some kids’ day!
Your team is hiring. What are the benefits for someone looking to join?
We’re a passionate and effective team of people who, although we work in seperate locations, have amazing communication and teamwork. Our role inspires creativity, flexibility, and pride. Office managers are tasked with the tall order of thinking/caring for their entire office, and it can be really rewarding!
Tell us about your morale associate (pet: if you have one).
Unfortunately I can’t have a dog in my apartment, and my roommate is allergic to cats, so I’ve resorted to drawing a goldfish on a post-it note and sticking it to my wall. Hank, my goldfish, is great! He can hang out in any room, he’s super low-maintenance, and he’s lived for a long time for a fish.
What’s been the coolest thing you’ve done with your unlimited PTO?
I went to India & Sri Lanka! I’ve been in love with the culture, food, history, and mythology of India since I was little and still can’t believe I was fortunate enough to actually go there. It truly was the trip of a lifetime!
What is your next adventure?
After visiting the Taj Mahal, I’m feeling like shooting for the stars. I think seeing the Pyramids of Egypt or Machu Picchu might be next!
How do you spend your free time?
If I’m not out boogying with friends at concerts, I’m likely reading, writing, or spending time with mother nature. I love camping, hiking, and climbing, roller-skating the boardwalk, and baking pastries.
If you could choose any TV show or movie world to live in, what would it be?
Game of Thrones. I’m a huge sucker for medieval warfare and the sinister motives of power. It’s everyone for themselves! What better way to test what you’re made of?
What’s one life lesson you wish you’d learned earlier?
You can always improve on your life; you just have work hard to make it happen. Change may be scary, but a healthy outlook sees the silver lining in every cloud.
Throughout your career, who have been some of your biggest muses, supporters, and role models?
Ironically, the past 3 years, another 3Qer. I met her first as a roommate, then friend, now co-worker. She not only has encouraged me to transition out of working tirelessly in kitchens, she helped provide the opportunity to work for 3Q, which has completely changed my life. She still mentors me with insightful advice in a new career path, encourages me in my new pursuits, and is someone I very much admire for her accomplishments.
What are your predictions for what will be trending in 2020?
Increasing recognition and importance of culture in corporate spaces!
