Our Humans of 3Q series continues this week with Dave Johnson, Account Manager out of our Charlottesville office! Get to know Dave below:
Explain your role at 3Q in 3 sentences or fewer:
As an Account Manager at 3Q Accelerate, I develop and implement search and social marketing strategies for 2-4 clients. I also manage Account Associates and Digital Marketing Strategists on my team, providing guidance and delegating client work.
What’s one marketing lesson you wished you had learned earlier?
Broad match modified keywords with multiple words need to have spaces in between the words (that was an embarrassing moment 4 weeks in).
What’s something that makes your office cooler than the other 3Q offices?
I’m sorry, but how many founding fathers are from San Diego?
When coworkers from other offices come to visit, what’s one thing they absolutely have to do in your city?
Hike up Old Rag – it’s the flagship hike in Shenandoah National Park. Wake up a bit early to get there in the morning, finish the hike in the afternoon, and visit a nearby winery before you head back into town.
What sets 3Q apart from other agencies in the industry?
Camaraderie. Like Dumbledore said, help will always be given at
Hogwarts 3Q Digital to those who ask for it. I’ve had coworkers that I’d never met offer to audit my accounts or jump on impromptu meetings after I asked a few performance questions in the social 101 slack channel.
What 3Q initiative outside of your job description are you most proud of being a part of? (3%, diversity committee, etc)
A coworker and I (shoutout to Lauren) lobbied for a year to have the office to go to an amusement park as a perk event.
Tell us about your morale associate (pet: if you have one).
I don’t have a morale associate, but I do have a fiancee! Like a pet, she has a name (Katie) and she likes it when I take her on walks or bring her food.
What’s been the coolest thing you’ve done with your unlimited PTO?
Being able to buy Phish tickets and not having to worry about having enough PTO to make the trip is a godsend.
How do you spend your free time?
Hiking & trail running in the Shenandoahs or in the trail system that goes around town. Also cooking, reading, and hanging out with my fiancee.
Have you participated in 3Q 3%? If so, what’s been your favorite experience?
We spent an afternoon at the Charlottesville Boys and Girls club to help out with their after school activities. We made scented playdough in Arts & Crafts and passed around some 3Q temporary tattoos. A few of the boys were hesitant to wear tattoos of sparkly unicorns, so we made a deal where I would get a tattoo in an “obvious” location if they would get it on their arms.
What do you think has been the most interesting change in the marketing industry or in your channel this year?
The implacable march towards automated marketing systems. Facebook’s Broad Targeting is giving better results than LALs in some accounts, Google’s RSAs are taking the micromanaging out of ad copy testing, and all channels are devoting substantial resources into automated bidding improvements. Managing the account details will become a smaller part of the marketer’s job in the future, leaving more time for strategic and creative development.
If you were given an unlimited amount of money to invest into one upcoming or exciting marketing technology, what would it be?
A podcast marketing platform. It’s kinda weird that what is essentially radio is the hot new marketing platform of 2019, but 1 / 3 Americans listen to a podcast at least once a month and the array of topics allows for substantial audience segmentation.
What’s your favorite TED talk?
I’m honestly not a huge TED talk watcher, but can I trade you a Tiny Desk Concert?
