Take some time and get to know Brad O’Brien, Sr. Director of Social and Native at 3Q Digital, working out of our San Diego office.
If you had $10M to personally invest, which marketing platform or technology would you invest in, and why?
I would invest in the ‘gig economy’. Companies like Uber, Lyft, Thumbtack, TaskRabbit, and DoorDash fascinate me. The ability for just about anyone to be their own boss and define their own schedule is in my mind a growing economy.
What’s one marketing lesson you wished you had learned earlier?
Data should not be intimidating. Data is always defensible and should be used to help tell your story.
What’s the best part of your office? (and specify the office)
The San Diego office is something special. The laid-back San Diego vibe combines with super intelligent people to create an environment where everyone knows how to take what they do seriously but not take themselves too seriously.
What does 3Q’s culture mean to you?
3Q is the first agency I’ve ever worked at, which is 100% intentional. I’ve always been client-side, and having to hire and fire countless agencies, I never thought very highly of agencies. However, there’s something notably different about 3Q compared to other agencies. We truly treat clients’ money like it’s our own, and it shows in our results. Complete accountability is the name of the game, and I personally love the opportunity to prove to clients that 3Q is different than any agency they’ve worked with.
Which of 3Q’s core values is most important to you, and why?
Own it. Showing initiative will always be best for the client and the company. I also believe part of any employee’s job is to make their manager’s job easier. Things simply function much more efficiently when teams adopt this mentality.
What has been your favorite perk item/activity?
Backyard BBQ at my house! The San Diego office wanted to do a perk activity, but were low on funds. We held a potluck BBQ and everyone had a great time. It was a true testament to the top reason our office loves perks: we get to hang out with each other. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy to have a good time!
What trips have you gone on/do you plan to go on with your unlimited PTO?
I love going to Central America. I once spent two and a half weeks traveling through Costa Rica by myself. Last year I vacationed to EL Salvador (with some fellow 3Qers), and this year I went to Belize. I’m dying to do Bocas Del Toro in Panama as well!
What is on your bucket list?
Like most people, I’d love to see the world. Traveling the United States in an RV and saying I’ve spent time in all 50 states would also be on the list. Singing on stage for an open mic night has always been a bucket list item as well – I have a ‘decent’ voice, but it’s more about putting myself outside of my own comfort zone.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I love outdoor activities – surfing, hiking, wake boarding, it doesn’t really matter what. I also really like to cook, go to music festivals, and hang out with my dog Duke!
