Five Reasons You Shouldn't Work For 3Q

It’s easy for an employer to tout all the reasons you should want to work for them, so I thought I’d turn things around and give you five reasons you absolutely should not work for 3Q.

1. You hate being challenged.

We seek out savvy clients – this means clients who aren’t content with the “set it and forget it” mentality of some agencies and don’t get smitten but fancy presentations that lack real substance. We expect our team members to stay one step ahead and be constantly innovating – from trying out Google betas to testing new ads and LPs to exploring different channels or platforms – and always building on their individual and collective knowledge. Digital marketing as a whole is constantly evolving; just when you think you’ve mastered the game, something new comes along or your client challenges you to squeeze even more conversions out of the same budget. If you aren’t the type who gets excited by learning new things or solving problems on a regular basis, this isn’t the place for you.

2. You despise helping others.

At 3Q, we’re all about client service – and that holds true for the way we treat each other internally as well. Two of our five core values are: Act for the Greater Good (think about what is good for the team before your own self-interest; e.g. mentor young teammates and help team members out) and Everyone is a Client (it is vital to have team members who are passionate about client service – not only service to clients, but to vendors, teammates, and peers as well). As an agency, we pride ourselves on our willingness to go above and beyond what a typical agency would do, not just in terms of strategy and hard work, but also in terms of honesty and open communication. If you don’t get a thrill from helping others achieve great things or believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and appreciation, this isn’t the place for you.

3. You want to be anonymous.

Some people want a job where they can pass days/weeks/months without having to deal with their manager. That’s not going to happen at 3Q. We ask all of our managers to do weekly or bi-weekly one-on-ones with each person on their team. It’s a time to discuss questions, concerns, suggestions, and career goals. Like it or not, your manager will know what you’re working on at all times and what challenges you’re facing – so they can work with you to overcome those challenges and focus on continued personal and professional growth, as well as growth for our clients. And the CEO will know who you are (and whether you’re an Iowa Hawkeye fan) within weeks of you joining, if not sooner. If you’re looking for a place where you can just do the job and just skate by anonymously, this isn’t the place for you.

4. You get annoyed when people ask for your feedback.

At 3Q, we are always asking employees for feedback. We have a bi-weekly company-wide “pulse” question (stuff like “On a scale of 1 to 10, how happy are you?” or “How effective are your 1x1s with your manager?”) and frequent surveys sent to specific teams about other things, like feedback on our training programs, ideas on improving office environments, suggestions from new hires to improve employee onboarding, or voting on what we should do for an office event. It can get pretty tiresome, always being asked to share ideas or feedback to make this a better place to work. If you just want to be left alone to do work and are fine with the status quo, this isn’t the place for you.

5. You just want someone to tell you what to do.

We have built out a lot of processes and core strategies over the years, but every account is different. We expect even our junior team members to be able to adapt and figure out the best way to tackle things without a lot of hand-holding. Our managers and senior employees are always there as a resource to mentor others or bounce around ideas, but we don’t ever want them to be a crutch. And at all levels, we expect people to Own It! – another of our core values – meaning we want our team members to be proactive, passionate, have a strong point of view, and over-communicate. If the thought of being given the freedom (and expectation) to innovate, adapt, and own what you do scares you – this isn’t the place for you.
So there you have it – five reasons not to work for 3Q Digital.
