In a recent blog, I wrote about the various ad types in YouTube. While setting these ads up is all well and good and will certainly help drive traffic, the process of uploading these ads to multiple campaigns can quickly turn into a time-intensive, laborious task. With no AdWords Editor functionality, manually setting up ads across multiple campaigns can and will take up a lot of time. Fortunately, there is a bulk editor within the UI that can help.
The first thing you’ll want to do is manually set up one of your ads in one campaign. This is so the UI can assign an ad id to the YouTube video for use with a bulk upload. You’ll want to remember what you named it because you will need to find it later in an Excel spreadsheet. After the ad is set up and named, change the UI view to “All video campaigns” and click the “Bulk upload” button.
Once you click on it you’ll see an upload/download box. With bulk uploads, you’ll have to download a sheet so you have all the corresponding data you’ll need for a CSV bulk upload into the UI. The easiest, quickest way to get the data is select “data only” and hit download.
It will take a while to download, but when it finishes you’ll have a pretty good sized spreadsheet that entails everything that’s set up within your account in the format you’ll need to use to upload new components. Scroll down until you see the section of the sheet that says “Input ads here”. From here, highlight the below row with labels Action, Status, etc., and filter that row. Find the ad you uploaded, then copy and paste the row it’s in with the above 2 rows (title and the “input ads” row) into a separate tab.

From here, you’ll want to go to the end of the sheet and delete the campaign and the targeting group labeled as “Enable ad for” and get rid of the ad id in parenthesis (this id is created per ad per the campaign it’s assigned to. So the ad will create its own id upon being uploaded into the UI). Now you’ll want to go back into the downloaded sheet and look at the section with “Input targeting groups here”.
Again, use the filter on the labeled row here. Once you’ve done that, filter for the campaigns you want to upload your ad to. Copy and paste the campaigns and their corresponding targeting group(s) into the sheet you created with the targeting groups under “Enable ad for” and obviously campaigns going under campaigns. From there, you can just fill in the settings in your ad and copy to all of the targeting groups/campaigns that you have on your sheet. Do make sure to put “Add” under the Action column or else the UI won’t recognize what you’re trying to do.
You’ll also have to clarify if you want the ad to be “in-search” or “in-display” within the upload sheet. When you have everything set, move your new tab as a new worksheet and save as a CSV file. Then go back into the bulk upload in the UI and, instead of selecting download, click on “Choose file”. Upload your CSV file and you should be all set. If it doesn’t work and you do get error messages, don’t be discouraged. There is a support page that can help you reference what needs to be fixed.
This is a longer process than what we as digital advertisers are typically used to when it comes to ad uploads, but with a little practice and a little patience, the bulk upload function in the AdWords for Video UI can prove to be a life-saver.
