This is the subhead for the blog post
This week we’re checking in with each of our offices to get the latest on their 3Q3% activities. 3Q3% is our company’s initiative to encourage our employees to spend at least 3% of their time giving back to their local communities. Each office has a dedicated 3Q3% organizer who plans group volunteering opportunities throughout the year. Today: San Francisco and Raleigh!

For the last 3 years, we partnered with SF-Marin Food Bank, donating our time by sorting food at their warehouse. This year, a few of us represented the food bank for an event in the Mission neighborhood. We handed out produce and educated locals on the various food programs offered in the city. Orange you glad you didn’t say banana?
In an effort to do some spring cleaning, we set up a clothing drive for colleagues to donate their used items to families in need. We packed an entire SUV full of clothing and items for a large donation to our local Goodwill donation center.
Since our city’s coast is the Pacific Ocean, we decided to support the local efforts for The Ocean Cleanup, that works to rid our oceans of garbage and waste. San Francisco is located next to the Great Pacific Garbage patch, one of the largest areas of garbage concentration in any ocean worldwide. To support the cause, we set up a Casino night themed fundraiser, complete with blackjack, hold ‘em and even a few magic card tricks. Overall, we were able to raise $1100 for the organization!
This holiday season, we’ll continue to support the community by adopting several local families and donating gifts to them. Last year we adopted 5 families and were able to buy everything on their wish lists!

Although the Raleigh office has not held any formal 3Q3% outings recently, we have found other ways to act for the greater good this year. Motivated by the opportunity to raise money for charity (and free pizza), the members of 3Q Raleigh vowed to win an agency-wide CharityMiles contest – wherein 3Q would award the winning office with $500 to donate to the charity of their choice. Racking up miles by walking our dogs, running on the treadmill and biking through local greenways, the office jumped out to a quick lead and looked destined for victory.
However, as the contest drew to a close, Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina and our mileage took a severe downturn due to extreme winds and flooding in the Raleigh area. As our momentum stagnated, competing offices like Chicago and San Diego made late pushes to eclipse our efforts and it looked like we might come up short. Fortunately, the skies cleared and we were able to log just enough miles to come out on top. With our $500 prize, we elected to make a donation to a Hurricane relief fund to help people in the Southeast whose lives were impacted by Florence. Best of all, Google offered to match any donation to the relief fund, so our $500 donation became $1,000 towards helping those in need.
And yes – we got our pizza party.
