Even without those pesky Senate hearings, Google has had an especially busy year. Whether you love them, hate them, or somewhere-in-between them, we all depend on them. So we all certainly took note of these five changes:

Panda – This series of algorithm changes (in February, April, and June) nailed low-quality sites, especially those using duplicate content. But hey, they warned us. Impact: high.

Google+ – The giant’s version of social networking went live this summer and, by the end of the year, had adapted to suit businesses and brands. The race with Facebook is on. Impact: high.

Fresh – This November algorithm change favors sites with recently updated content. Impact: moderate.

Privacy changes – Google announced these changes in October, and SEOs and retargeters grumbled (and questioned the morality behind the changes). Impact: too early to tell, but the guess here is moderate.

Google Analytics improvements – Multi-channel funnels, mobile reporting, site speed reports, and webmaster integration were pretty significant developments, especially on the SEM front. Impact: moderate.
